The sole purpose of the circuit breakers in your electrical panel box is safety. They are designed to cut off electricity to the circuits in your home in the event of a fault or overload. An obsolete or outdated panel should be replaced or at the very least inspected. Panels that lost their UL listing due to faulty breakers, i.e. Federal Pacific Electrical Panels (FPE), are a prime example. These panels can be found in homes and entire neighborhoods throughout Colorado Springs and should be replaced immediately. Screw in fuse boxes are an example of outdated. In our experience, some insurance companies want to have these fuse boxes inspected or replaced prior to insuring a home.
Adding a new load in your electrical panel may require a panel upgrade. Loads are calculated with what was existing in your home at the time it was built. A new air conditioner unit or hot tub may overload the main breaker or feeder wires in your electrical panel. A significant load increase may require more amps than is currently available in an existing electrical service panel.
